If it's not working, change it up and do something different. By the time you finish Sunless Citadel you should be a lot more comfortable DMing.Ī couple general tips: First, don't feel like a published adventure ties your hands. (A warhammer instead of a sword, or whatever) I don't remember the loot from the end areas, but the PCs are only at level 3 or so, so they shouldn't be getting anything amazing. In terms of loot, you can just swap something out if it makes sense for your party. Also, let the rats try and hide from the players and see if the players can use perception checks to find them. Having no combat at all gets boring just like having too much combat gets boring. This serves to get you, and your players, comfortable with the 5e combat rules and it keeps them on their toes. I would recommend you DO run the combat involving the twig blights on the way there - treat it as if it were a random encounter - and then the minor combat (rats maybe?) on the way down. If they RP a bit, they'll gain some allies, deal with a few traps, and have a good time. You'll notice, in the first level of the dungeon, there isn't much combat unless the PCs are foolish and attack everything on sight. In fact, I think it's almost as good as the Starter Set in this regard. It was made to introduce players (AND DMs) to 3rd edition rules, and it can serve that purpose for 5e as well.
